errata and symlinks

I cannot seem to recall the rationale for having errata symlinks created
on /home/httpd instead of in the repo. It seems to add an unneeded extra
layer of complexity. Then on top of that we have to add targets to the
rsync exclude list so that the website regen doesn't delete the
symlinks. Could someone shed some light on this, please?
