  	<h3 id="newwebsitedesign">New website design</h3>
  		<h4>Jeroen Coumans - 25/7/2003</h4>
  		<p>The LFS team is proud to present the new website! There were some disadvantages with the old site which are adressed in this new design.</p>
  		<ul>
  			<li>The website now uses semantically correct and valid XHTML-1.1 and CSS-2 throughout the entire site (check it for yourself with the button's at the bottom). A new look is simply a matter of adjusting the stylesheet. The site is optimized for Unix browsers, such as <a href="http://www.mozilla.org">Mozilla</a> and <a href="http://www.konqueror.org">Konqueror</a>, and is more friendly for text browsers, such as <a href="http://lynx.browser.org/">lynx</a>.</li>
  			<li>We've tried to reduce the load on the main LFS server. First of all, <a href="../becomemirror.html" title="Learn how to become a mirror">mirror usage</a> is now enforced from the main section pages. Thanks to the use of relative links, mirrors can keep a copy of the entire site. A new initiative is the use of <a href="packages.html">P2P network links</a> for downloading the LFS tarballs. Right now this is a volunteer effort, but is well on its way to becoming the most reliable method of getting the packages.</li>
  			<li>Together with the fresh look comes a fresh navigation system. In graphical browsers you can navigate quickly to each LFS project with the top links. On the right column you'll always see the site-wide navigation links, while the left column is reserved for project-specific links. Be sure to check out the <a href="../accesskeys.html">accessibility statement</a>, which tells you how to use keyboard shortcuts to navigate the website. In text browsers you'll see a number of skip-links have been added so you can quickly navigate through the website. You'll also be pleasantly surprised when printing the website.</li>
  			<li>The website's focus has shifted towards being more of a central portal for LFS and the community. The most visible change towards this goal is the inclusion of news pages for each section. These will inform you of new hints, recent changes in the books and, of course, book releases. The pages contain entries which are created by scripts which <a href="../website.html#todo">parse LFS and BLFS CVS changelogs</a>. To stay informed of all website changes, you can view <a href="../website.html#changelog">the dynamically generated changelog.</a></li>
  			<li>Some sections have rewritten or new content. For example, the <a href="../hints/news.html">hints section</a> now has additional instructions on <a href="../hints/howtowrite.html">how to write</a> hints, <a href="../hints/submit.html">how to submit</a> them and even <a href="../hints/adoptahint.html">how to take over other people's hints</a>! The <a href="../alfs/news.html">ALFS</a> section now also lists other people's build scripts next to its own official Automated LFS system. </li>
  			<li>As you can see, there are lots of additional goodies hidden on the website. The best thing to do is to start surfing! Please send all comments, positive and negative, to <a href="mailto:website at linuxfromscratch.org">the website mailing list</a>. Also use that list if you find any bugs in this site, whether it's a browser not displaying pages properly or an orphaned link. Please include some information about your browser and the resolution you're using. </li>
  		</ul>
  		<p>There's more information available at the <a href="../website.html">website information page</a></p>

  	<h3 id="mail_change">Mailing list software changes</h3>
  		<h4>Gerard Beekmans - 24/7/2003</h4>
  		<p>Tomorrow I'm going to start the process of moving all the mailinglists to Mailman management. When a list is being moved I need to disable it in Postfix and change the aliases, as well as move the archive over to Mailman. This will take some time, especially the initial archiving (Mailman keeps archives (html and mbox) up-to-date as emails arrive, so before the list is opened again, the archives have to be in place first).</p>
  		<p>I'll send a message to the list I'm working on so you don't have to bother trying to email it. It'll bounce.</p>
  		<p>Then there's the matter of filtering on you guys' end. I don't see a way to make Mailman use the X-List: header so I'm afraid you're going to have to change your email filters. Instead of filtering by X-List, you'll need to filter by List-Id. Here's a regex example for procmail which will filter all messages from lfs-book:</p>
  		<code>* ^List-Id: .*<listname.linuxfromscratch.org></code>
  		<p>So that's listname<strong>.</strong>linuxfromscratch.org, not listname<strong>@</strong>linuxfromscratch.org.</p>
  		<p>Examples: <code>lfs-dev.linuxfromscratch.org</code>, <code>faq.linuxfromscratch.org</code>, <code>blfs-support.linuxfromscratch.org</code></p>
  		<p><em>Update:</em> the <a href="../mail.html">mail instructions page</a> has been updated.</p>

  	<h3 id="logocontest">Logo contest</h3>
  		<h4>Gerard Beekmans - 25/6/2003</h4>
  		<p>Together with the website facelift we'll be holding an LFS Logo contest. I thought it'd be nice to throw in a small prize as an extra incentive and "thank you" to the winner.</p>
  		<p>The prize is going to be a brand new book called "UNIX Systems Programming" which is the anticipated update of the mid-1990's UNIX programming classic "Practical UNIX Programming" by Kay and Steven Robins (same authors who wrote this new book).</p>
  		<p>This completely updated book demonstrates how to design complex software to get the most from the UNIX operating system, whether using Linux. Solaris, Mac OS X or another POSIX-based system. This new edition features all-new chapters on the Web, UPD and server performance. The book thoroughly explores communication, concurrency and multi-threading. It also deals with UNIX process files/special files, signal/timers, POSIX threads, semaphores, IPC, TCP/UDP/multicast and more.</p>
  		<p>It also contains exercises throughout the chapters to test if you can put to work what you just learned.</p>
  		<p>I'm reading through it right now for work and will be writing a review and posting a sample chapter up at tools.devchannel.org when I'm finished. And, don't worry - I won't be giving the winner this used book. I was sent an extra copy as a promotial item and to hand out to whom I want.</p>
  		<p>Oh, the book is even in hard-cover.</p>
  		<p>There is no hard set deadline for the logo. We're working on a new LFS website design which will take some time. Ideally the winning logo should be picked out around the time the website is done (subscribe to the website at linuxfromscratch.org mailinglist if you want to stay abreast of progress).</p>
  		<p>I only have one book to give away, so the winner of the LFS logo will get the book. But it would still be nice to have (slightly) different logo's for ALFS, BLFS and Hints that will be more in line with that project's 'theme'.</p>

  	<h3 id="wiki_opened">Developers wiki opened</h3>
  		<h4>Nicholas Leippe - 21/6/2003</h4>
  		<p>I've set up the wiki on the sf account, and seeded it with some entries from recent issues on the list. This should be enough to give an idea of what can be done.</p>
  		<p>Since there wasn't much enthusiasm when this was first mentioned a while back, I don't expect everyone to rush to it. (/me hears groans, "yet another place to look!")</p>
  		<p>Please, at least read the introduction and purpose on the homepage and give it a chance. I really do think a wiki can help LFS be that much better.</p>
  		<p>I'd like to give it a week or two for the active contributors on lfs-dev to play with it and add to it before mentioning it to lfs-support.</p>
  		<p>Well, anyways, here it is:</p>
  		<p><a href="http://lfs.sourceforge.net/wiki/">http://lfs.sourceforge.net/wiki/</a></p>
  		<p>Nick (irc: kamikaze)</p>
  		<p>p.s. I <em>am</em> willing to maintain it as necessary--so no additional admin burden on anyone else.</p>

  	<h3 id="todo">Todo</h3>
  	<h4>Create scripts</h4>
  		<p>The goal is to make each section's news page reflect the most current state of development. The result would be an extract of {b}lfs-book and {b}lfs-dev which is usefull as a development overview and reference point. In order to reach that goal, we need some scripts which feed development messages into the website. We can automate Bugzilla and CVS, while interesting e-mails can be added manually (this is currently done on <a href="lfs/news.html">the LFS news page</a>.</p>
  		<p>To achieve this we needtwo scripts.</p>
  		<h5>CVS script</h5>
  		<p>First for CVS: I need a script which extracts information from each project's CVS commit messages. This information is then fed into the respective project's news page. The scripts should extract the following info from CVS changelogs: </p>
  			<ol>
  				<li>who and when</li>
  				<li>what</li>
  			</ol>
  		<p>This information is then converted to a webpage-structure like this:</p>
  			<ol>
  				<li><strong>who</strong>: who commited the change. Should look like this: Name <e-mailadress>. <br /><strong>when</strong>: when was this commited. Together, they form the header for the commit message. Thus, they should be enclosed in <h4> like this:
  				<h4>Jeroen <jeroen at linuxfromscratch.org> - 23/07/2003</h4></li>
  				<li>what: the commit message is a paragraph and should thus be enclosed in <p>.</li>
  			</ol>
  		<p>The script should thus extract this from the CVS logs and <em>add</em> it to an intermediate file. By only adding information to an intermediate file, the content of this page should thus be manually adjustable in case we want to add news ourselves. That should account for the body. The whole page can be cat'ed together with a seperate header and footer which I can provide.</p>
  		<p>Also, it might be nice if we could archive news pages each month. This would have the advantage that no news is lost and that the news pages are bookmarkable. Therefore, it should be a symlink to news/year/month.html (where year and month are numerical values of course). This can be done from a crontab. The old news pages are kept on archives.linuxfromscratch.org so there's no additional burden for the mirrors.</p>
  		<p>Allthough I lack the skills to write such a script myself, I've <a href="http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~jeroen/">hacked</a> <a href="http://www.red-bean.com/cvs2cl/">cvs2cl.pl</a> and managed to get <a href="#changelog">this output</a>. <em>This method is nowhere near suitable for the requirements set above, so if you're familiar with Perl, XML and/or XSL, please <a href="mailto:website at linuxfromscratch.org">e-mail the website list</a>!</em></p>
  		<h5>Bugzilla script</h5>
  		<p>Similar to the above CVS scripts we should also get or write a script which feeds Bugzilla messages into the project's newspages. The information which needs to be extracted is the same (who, when and what bug is reported). Additionally, it should contain a link to the bug page. This script should be triggered whenever Bugzilla changes (a bug is added, resolved, commented etc.). This way, active LFS'ers can read the website daily, be aware of the current state of LFS and be able to directly comment on bugs. </p>
  		<p><em>I haven't found a script yet which can extract this information. Again, please <a href="mailto:website at linuxfromscratch.org">e-mail the website list</a> if you're able to help.</em></p>
  	<h4>Convert hard-coded pages</h4>
  		<p>Next to the scripts there are a couple of pages which need to be converted to using the new design's layout. These are:</p>
  		<ul>
  			<li><a href="http://search.linuxfromscratch.org">The default search interface</a>. I'd rather use <a href="search.html">this page</a> though. Should be just a matter of copying it to the search domain directory and symlinking some stuff.</li>
  			<li>The search results page. Currently it looks butt-ugly and out-of-synch even with the old website.</li>
  			<li><a href="http://linuxfromscratch.org/cgi-bin/lfscounter.cgi">The LFS counter</a>.</li>
  			<li><a href="http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/lfs-chat">The mailinglist information pages</a>. These use the default GNU Mailman templates but they can be adjusted, hopefully.</li>
  			<li><a href="http://bugs.linuxfromscratch.org/">The bugzilla pages</a>. Shouldn't be more work than to add the template to their content.</li>
  		</ul>
  	<h4>Adjust server setup</h4>
  		<p>Someone needs to create a link from <a href="http://archive.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-museum/stable/">the latest stable book release</a> to <a href="http://archive.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-museum/4.1/">version 4.1</a>. It only needs to exist on the server. A similar link should be created for BLFS.</p>
  		<p>We should also think about how the current test.linuxfromscratch.org directory can be mapped to the old website's structure so that <a href="http://beyond.linuxfromscratch.org">BLFS</a> refers to <a href="http://test.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/">the new site</a> but without changing all relative links in those pages. </p>
  		<p>We should also update the rsync scripts so that mirrors only mirror the content. I'll have to change some links so that blfs/artwork stays on belgarath (it's a whopping 11Mb large). Perhaps we should also host the LFS and BLFS online books only on belgarath (this shaves off another 8.4Mb for the mirrors). Else we'd have to up the diskspace requirements for mirrors to 10-20Mb instead of 5-10Mb.</p>
  	<h4>User testing</h4>
  		<p>Finally, if most of the above is done (especially once the scripts are implemented), we should call for as many LFS'ers as we can for testing the site so we can hammer out all remaining bugs. Of special interest is backwards compatibility with older (fourth generation) browsers with limited CSS support such as NN4, IE4, Konqueror 2.x and Opera <5. The most useful bugreports include screenshots. We should get many for different browsers, resolutions, DPI's (or font sizes) and, of course, Operating Systems.</p>

  <h2 id="blfsnews">BLFS-specific news</h2>
  	<h3 id="thispage">Page now updated</h3>
  		<h4>Jeroen Coumans - 1/8/2003</h4>
  		<p>The BLFS news page will now be properly updated with recent CVS changelogs and general LFS-project news. It also has an <a href="feed.rss">RSS newsfeed</a> which contains the latest headlines of BLFS-specific and general news.</p>
  		<p>Note that this is still based on <a href="http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~jeroen/cvs2xhtml.pl">my hack</a> of <a href="http://www.red-bean.com/cvs2cl/">cvs2cl.pl</a>, which should be <a href="../website.html#todo">rewritten</a>.</p>
  		<p>It also lacks Bugzilla messages, which are needed to give a proper view of the current BLFS development status. </p>
  		<p>There are no news-worthy developments announced on the BLFS mailinglists, but when they are, they should be included in this page. For now, I'll maintain this section. In the future, this should probably also be edited by the BLFS editors. They monitor the lists and are aware of significant BLFS developments. </p>
  		<p>Allthough there is no mechanism yet to phase out old news, it's fairly easy to add new news. This file is actually divided in two parts, of which the top part should be adjusted with news. A look at the source shows that it is fairly trivial to add news, as long as the structure remains intact. Use <h3> for the news title (or e-mail subject), and <h4> for the who - when. Use <p>'s for the e-mail or message. </p>
  		<p>Since the pages are all XHTML, please ensure that the page is still well-formed. If the page is not well-formed, the <a href="http://linuxfromscratch.org/pipermail/lfs-chat/2003-July/016028.html">lfs2rss.pl</a> script which Rob Park contributed won't work and the pages won't validate.</p>

  <h2 id="lfsnews">LFS-specific news</h2>
  	<h3 id="thispage">Page now updated</h3>
  		<h4>Jeroen Coumans - 1/8/2003</h4>
  		<p>The LFS news page will now be properly updated with recent CVS changelogs and general LFS-project news. It also has an <a href="feed.rss">RSS newsfeed</a> which contains the latest headlines of LFS-specific and general news.</p>
  		<p>It also lacks Bugzilla messages, which are needed to give a proper view of the current LFS development status.

  	<h3 id="bookredone">The book redone</h3>
  		<h4>Alex Groenewoud - 29/7/2003</h4>
  		<p>Impatient with the chaotic state of the book, irked by a comment from Gerard, and reminded of something by Jeroen, I went and rewrote the entire book.</p>
  		<p>I changed the structure, moved things around, threw some things out, and rewrote just about all of the text. And moved it from Lilo to Grub to boot.</p>
  		<p>You can <a href="http://home.wanadoo.nl/krisp/betterbook/index.html">browse</a> the result. You can also download the html in a <a href="http://home.wanadoo.nl/krisp/betterbook/boos-in-html.tar.bz2">tarball</a> (61 kB). And you can download the docbook xml in a <a href="http://home.wanadoo.nl/krisp/betterbook/boos-in-xml.tar.bz2.">tarball</a> too.</p>
  		<p>(This may come at an awkward time, with the move to custom xml just about to begin, but... maybe it's not too late.)</p>
  		<p>Comments are very welcome.</p>
  		<p>Alex</p>
