I am not really sure whether hibernation over ssh is really supposed to

It should make some disk noise and then power itself off completely at 
this point. Does it do so? If not, try booting as "linux 
resume=/dev/hda5 pci=noacpi noapic nolapic" and retrying the hibernation 
procedure - this boot line disables common troublemakers at the cost of 
some slowdown.
