Sorry, it turns out SSL does configure. (Yes, I have OpenSSL.)

What I had trouble with is JPEG and TIFF support. I have the JPEG
group's runtime library (/usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62.0.0), and TIFF
libraries (/usr/lib/libtiff.so.4.1.4, /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4) . But
"configure" outputs:

[...]
checking for jpeglib.h... no
checking for jpeg_destroy_decompress in -ljpeg... no
checking for tiffio.h... no
checking for TIFFClientOpen in -ltiff... no
[...]
Configuration results:

GPM support: NO
SSL support: YES
Javascript enabled: YES
Regular expressions: LIBC
Graphics enabled: YES
Graphics drivers: X
Image formats: GIF PNG XBM
xterm for OS/2 support: NO
---------------------------------------------------------

The comiled binary does not display JPEG or TIFF images. PNG images
display fine.
