It is so fast, and well designed for the user, that it is a pleasure to use! (Actually, I have some suggestions for the user interface, but I will save them for another email.) How can I make Links render as in the screen shots at http://links.twibright.com/features.php ? For example, if I go to slashdot.com, the layout of the page looks very different than the second screen shot. The background is all grey and there are no columns. (In my Miscellaneous options, "background color" is set to "ffffff".) I thought the reason for the discrepancy is that I had an old version of Links, but with the newest version, I get the same effect. Thanks for your help! No that's because Slashdot changed to CSS and Links doesn't support CSS. How low is CSS as a priority? I don't see it on the Links Development webpage, so I guess it has not even been considered. Why is it that most of my pages have a grey background, although my Video preferences say it should be white? The "Background color" option seems to set the color of toolboxes and menus, but not pages. Is this intended? If so, it should say "Options for menus and dialog boxes" or something like that. And "Menu font size" should be changed to "Font size", because it controls the font size for all widgets. It wuld be nice to have options for foreground and background colors, under "HTML options". But I would actually suggest that the default colors (if no page is loaded or the page does not specify a color) should be black foreground on white background. As far as I know, this is easier usually easier to read because more light reaches the eye. And this is why most programs use black on white. It also seems to me more appealing. "HTML options" should be under the "Settings" menu, because it contains settings, not "view" actions like "search", "document info", etc. From phil.ganchev at gmail.com Sun Oct 8 21:06:49 2006 From: phil.ganchev at gmail.com (Philip Ganchev) Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2006 23:06:49 -0400 Subject: Fwd: Re: [Links] rendering question In-Reply-To: <3aba28080610051816s2b2b4a60wedc65e1ff6681334@mail.gmail.com> References: <3aba28080610051506p6ff2049fhacad0a8fb1e8aca9@mail.gmail.com> <3aba28080610051816s2b2b4a60wedc65e1ff6681334@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <3aba28080610082006g21ed41b1q75fbdbc45fb2ee4e@mail.gmail.com> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Philip Ganchev Date: Oct 5, 2006 9:16 PM Subject: Re: Fwd: [Links] rendering question To: Kali McLaughlin On 10/13/06, Kali McLaughlin wrote: > Dear Philip: > I am writing off-list because of smtp problems. > I appreciated your post even though I run link sin text mode. > There has been very little traffic on the links-list unfortunately. > I am using links2.1pre-release 17 > which I compiled with SSL & javascript with some difficulty. > I have failed to compile prerelease 20 on this 2.2.6 kernel Slackware > machine. (Yes, I have OpenSSL.) What I had trouble with is JPEG and TIFF support. I realize that the developers probably have little time to spend on Links, so these ideas may never be implemented. I am putting them up for discussion, and perhaps someone will eventually implement some of them. (I cannot yet write C, unfortunately.) First, I think forward history would be very useful. Users often navigate back in history and then again to the page they were at. An unofficial patch for this by Peter Wang is at http://links.twibright.com/download/unofficial_patches/. The associated txt file says it si too dangerous to put into the main release. Why? Underline links. They would be easier to recognize, especially if they are colored in an unusal color. Also, it is clear which words are separate links and which are together one link. Use the status bar instead of dialog boxes for URLs and text search. Dialog boxes are too obtrusive; they may hide the search results or the text needed to compose the search query or the URL. The status bar is inactive anyway if a dialog box is present. In graphics mode, support copying text from dialog boxes like the URL box to the X clipboard, and pasting to text boxes on the page. This is makes transfering information like URLs and search terms much easier. Some kind of smart bookmarks, that would allow the user to use web search and lookup (like Wikipedia, dictionary) without first navigating to a website. An easy way is to provide a home page shortcut and so that the user can create a local home page containing text boxes and buttons for the appropriate web search services. See for example http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~philip/.portal.html . Using a local page reduces the latency for searching. How can I stop the loading of a page? It would be great to remove modes. A mode is a difference in way a program responds to a gesture in one state versus another, while the user's locus of attention is not the state. In Links, scrolling using "[", "]", "Insert" and "Delete" is modal because it does not work if the focus is inside a text box or a text area (and the result is completely different). The user has to check every time, and exit the text area if needed. This is slow and distracting. Other modes are pressing "z" or "Backspace" to go back in history, "h" ot display history, "=" for info, etc, although it is possible to use the menus (Alt+f, etc). All these can be removed if the key combinations for the actions include the Control key. Single keys can still be supported for users who (think they) like to use single keys. If no page is loaded when Links starts, show the "Go to URL" box automatically. This is the only way to navigate, so it saves hitting G. Do not hide the meny bar. This saves not only saves one mouse click to activate the menu bar, but also the navigation to the right menu is easier. Also, a new user may not know there is a menu, but if it is visible, most users will know how to use it. Use grey color to distinguish the menu bar from the page. If the menu and the URL cannot fit together at the top line, draw the URL over the last part of the menu. If the user clicks on the top line, draw the menu over the URL. Since the code for zooming is already implemented, why not make a keyboard shortcut to allow zooming on the fly, wihtout going through menus? Before compilation, the configure program can check which programs are available (xpdf, etc) for viewing various file formats, and create a Links configuration file. It would be preferable to have sans-serif fonts instead of the serif. They are easier to read on-screen, and Links is mostly used on-screen. Incremental search like in Elinks and Mozilla would be very useful. I was missing libjpeg-dev and livtiff-dev (actually libjpeg62-dev and libtiff4-dev). Sorry for the bother. After installing them, I still could not configure JPEG support, until I tried with a freshly unpacked source. I guess you have to wait until the new page loads and go back to the old one -- or kill all your connections). The pictures are still showing Links set to Czech, but at least the user manual is usable. I also changed the default location of the manual in the menu and in the default bookmarks in the Links CVS. So the next version will come out with this already changed. You can see the documentations here: http://links.twibright.com/download.php CL<
