Although I agree with you, boot loaders don't have to be horrid.  They 
have only one job:  copy one (possibly two) files from a device (disk, 
usb stick, cd, dvd, lan, etc) to memory and do a jmp instruction to the 
proper location (1st byte of the loaded file).

The problem is that for a simple job, they make it complicated.
