Lets see what you have for ~/.bashrc and ~/.bash_profile

~/.bash_profile should be one line:

exec env -i HOME=$HOME TERM=$TERM PS1='\u:\w\$ ' /bin/bash

The -i starts with an empty envronment and then sets PS1 when running a new 
instance of bash.
