make mrproper redux

So, here I am again. I've meticulously followed (I fondly believe)
instructions up to this chapter: 6.7. Linux-2.6.35.4 API Headers.

I have executed chroot and all directory/symlink instruction.

Now my location looks like this:
root:/# ls -al
total 72
drwxr-xr-x 21 1000 1000 4096 Nov 29 18:53 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 1000 1000 4096 Nov 29 18:53 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:54 bin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 boot
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 4140 Nov 29 04:35 dev
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:55 etc
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 home
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 lib
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 media
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 mnt
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 opt
dr-xr-xr-x 218 root root 0 Nov 27 23:59 proc
drwxr-x--- 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:55 root
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 sbin
drwxrwxrwt 60 1001 1001 4096 Nov 29 18:40 sources
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 srv
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 0 Nov 27 23:59 sys
drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:55 tmp
drwxr-xr-x 13 1001 1001 4096 Nov 29 18:17 tools
drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:53 usr
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Nov 29 18:54 var

However, note the following:
root:/# make mrproper
make: *** No rule to make target `mrproper'. Stop.

What has gone wrong? Am I supposed to cd /sources/linux-2.6.36.1 and
then $make mrproper?

I strongly suspect that to be the case, for, after having done so, the
little box whirred prettily and produced the following messages:

   CLEAN scripts/basic
   CLEAN scripts
   CLEAN usr/include
   CLEAN include/linux/version.h

How 'bout it. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance.

robert
