It's not clear that you followed the directions:

tar -xf gcc.tarball
cd gcc-4.5.1
untar mfpr, mv...
untar gmp, mv...
untar mpc, mv...
mkdir -v ../gcc-build
cd ../gcc-build
...

Also double check vii. Host System Requirements
