Interface eth0 does not exist

I don't have ifconfig installed because I followed the lfs book 6.3. But I
tried to rename the ifconfig.eth0 to ifconfig.eth1. I get interface eth1
doesn't exist.
I have not moved the vmware dir neither I've disconnected the ethernet since
the build.
