[lfs] error compiling gcc in Pass 1

However I feel that the instructions in 5.5.1 should be more clear saying that mpfr & gmp should be extracted in gcc's source directory.
Which mistake did you commit?

I had figured it was a small error somewhere..
Is there some documentation which provides _reasons_ as to what we are
doing? Or do we learn that as we read on?
