Actually the dd I listed is not enough to confirm anything... It seems 
that the mbr has not been altered by anything I've done. I am quite 
curious how stage1 is directed to the other stages, but, other than a 
curious configure switch, I'm not really any closer to showing that 
menu.lst's existence affects anything during setup.

The switch:
--enable-preset-menu=/menu.lst
Embeds a menu.lst in the stage2 file and if /boot/grub/menu.lst does not 
exist uses it. Not that I can really think of a situation where my 
menu.lst would go missing and not the stage2 file... but still 
interesting...

Anyhow, I'll stop thinking out loud on the list and post when I've 
actually got something substantial.
