Problem after entering chroot after jhalfs finishes

I made some headway on this. I'm pretty sure I've tracked the problem 
down to being less, but rebuilding it doesn't fix the problem.

It crashes on even simple things, like the jhalfs-2.1 README.

Ideas on how I can track down the problem?

I still haven't figured out the passwd problem, btw.
