Do you have SATA? I had problems with grub/SATA once, because Gentoo's 
livecd recognized the harddisk as hda, but grub wouldn't. The solution 
for me was to enable SCSI disk and emulation support. Now the disk is 
beeing accessed as /dev/sda.

My menu.lst is:

title   Gentoo GNU/Linux
root    (hd0,0)
kernel  /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1
