I'm guessing that your host isn't up to scratch or you need to install 
the "devel" packages from your distro.

What host distribution and version are you using? And what is the kernel 
version?
What version of the book are you using?

Have you read the prerequisites for building the book, and more 
importantly the host System requirements:
