OK, this is weird.  /usr/lib/libc.so is supposed to be a linker
script, but the binutils you just built is having troubles with it. 
Could you print the results of `cat /usr/lib/libc.so'?  Here's what it
looks like on an LFS system with glibc-2.3.4:

$ cat /usr/lib/libc.so
/* GNU ld script
   Use the shared library, but some functions are only in
   the static library, so try that secondarily.  */
GROUP ( /lib/libc.so.6 /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a )
