That is exactly what I did some month ago. I ended up with an error that could
not be solved so far.
Then I started writing my scripts. That makes it more comfortable to restart
the whole process of (trying to) build LFS. ;-)

Sorry, didn't thought about the point of deciphering the script. But in fact,
the script does exactly what the book says. Well, I have the source tar balls
in an subdirectory of "$LFS/source", namely "$LFS/source/packages".
