How about checking for the libraries it's linked against. Here's what I get
on my home setup:

 	$ ldd /usr/bin/find
 	linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
 	libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7eeb000)
 	/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7fee000)

then go and check that the libraries referenced by path/file are really there
