Unable to modify password / login

Exactly the same problem here... 

Recreating device node tty solved the problem. 

You can easily see if there are any corrupt device nodes by using ls in colour mode:
    ls --color
or with more detail:
    ls --color -l

To solve it, remove the corrupt device:
    rm tty
and recreate it:
    mknod -m 666 /dev/tty c 5 0
