Yes, I completely removed the old build of my lfs kernel and cleaned the
kernel source-tree, then began to re-do everything and re-copied the new
kernel to the correct location.

Are you SURE that when you rebuilt the kernel with ext3 support that you
copied the new kernel to /boot from the build directory?
