So where is the binutils-2.14 directory then if it's not where it should
be? You did untar the binutils-2.14.tar.gz file didn't you?

In short:

cd /mnt/hdb7/build
tar -xzvf binutils-2.14.tar.gz
cd binutils-2.14
mkdir ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build
../binutils-2.14/configure --prefix=/tools --disable-nls

Incidentally, and this isn't meant to sound rude, but you are expected
to do a little troubleshooting yourself. None of your problems so far
should be beyond a reasonably experienced Linux user. There's some
prerequisites and useful links listed at
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/6.0/prologue/prerequisites.html.

Regards,

Matt.
