Did all the above again. I am using Damn Small Linux as the host again now. Here are my attempts and the outputs:

lfs at 5[lfs]$ cd binutils-build
lfs at 5[binutils-build]$ time { ./configure ... && ... && ... && make install; }
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

real 0m0.016s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s
lfs at 5[binutils-build]$ ../binutils-2.14/configure --prefix=/tools --disable-nls
bash: ../binutils-2.14/configure: No such file or directory
lfs at 5[binutils-build]$ whoami
lfs
lfs at 5[binutils-build]$ export
declare -x HOME="/home/lfs"
declare -x LANG="C"
declare -x LANGUAGE="us"
declare -x LC_ALL="POSIX"
declare -x LFS="/mnt/lfs"
declare -x OLDPWD="/home/lfs"
declare -x PATH="/tools/bin:/bin:/usr/bin"
declare -x PS1="\\[\\]\\u at 5[\\W]\\\$\\[\\] "
declare -x PWD="/home/lfs/binutils-build"
declare -x SHLVL="1"
declare -x TERM="rxvt"
lfs at 5[binutils-build]$ umask
0022
lfs at 5[binutils-build]$ pwd
/home/lfs/binutils-build
