glibc-2.3.3 install problem (sln): Illegal instruction

I'm getting this problem when I try to install glibc 2.3.3
(chap 5, LFS-5.1.1, the compilation is fine).

if test -r /tools/include/gnu/stubs.h && cmp -s
/mnt/lfs/sources/glibc-build/stubs.h /tools/include/gnu/stubs.h; \
then echo 'stubs.h unchanged'; \
else /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 /mnt/lfs/sources/glibc-build/stubs.h
/tools/include/gnu/stubs.h; fi
rm -f /mnt/lfs/sources/glibc-build/stubs.h
make[1]: *** [install-symbolic-link] Illegal instruction (core dumped)
make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/lfs/sources/glibc-2.3.3-lfs-5.1'
make: *** [install] Error 2

I haven't set any optimisation flags as per instructions in
the book, and my host system is RH6.2 on a Pentium III 650 MHz

Someone posted the same problem in the mailing list
archives back in March but without any solution appearing.

Hoping for any clues/pointers that might have come up since...
