Problems with charset / german Umlaute

Yeah. That did it. The keymap was loaded right. That I have verified 
several time. But the font thing did it.
Is there a way to set this at startup. Perhaps a kernel option like 
vga=... for video mode. font=... so to say. Would be nice, because I 
don't wanna set it all the time at the console or my /etc/profile, 
because I am using umlauts at startup, where my bash-scripts are not ran.
