No, the sscanf patch makes glibc-2.3.2 compile with gcc-3.3.2, otherwise 
gcc generates an error due to some old syntax in glibc.

If you're getting this message, that means the compiler you built 
previous (gcc-3.3.2) is not being found and that's a problem. You didn't 
mention in your message whether this was happening in chapter 5 or 6, so 
I'll assume chapter 5.

In that case, your PATH is not correct, you must not have /tools/bin as 
the _first_ item in the PATH.
