grub not working after livecd install (moved from wrong list)

I finished a Livecd install about an hour ago and can't get the system to boot.
I know the alfs profile on the CD doesn't install the bootloader, so after the
alfs finished I went through chap 8.4 and setup grub.

My partitions are as follows:
/dev/hda2 6 68 506047+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda3 * 69 4982 39471705 83 Linux

On the grub command line I entered:

grub> root (hd0,2)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

grub> setup (hd0)
  Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
  Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
  Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 16 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
  Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,2)/boot/grub/stage2
/boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeeded
Done.

My /boot/grub/menu.1st (whihc I believe to be correct) is:

# Begin /boot/grub/menu.lst

# By default boot the first menu entry.
default 0

# Allow 30 seconds before booting the default.
timeout 30

# Use prettier colors.
color green/black light-green/black

# The first entry is for LFS.
title LFS 6.0
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/lfskernel-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/hda3

But when I rebooted the system I see a quick grub message I don't have time to
read and then the system reboots.

I tried rebooting from the livecd and booting manually with grub:

grub> root (hd0,2)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

grub> kernel /boot/lfskernel-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/hda3
    [Linux-bzImage, setup=0xa00, size=0x1df303]

grub> boot

Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.

and grub just exits without booting.

Any ideas? I'm SOOOOO close!

Steve
