find behaviour differs depending on directory

I have a really weird problem with find. Sometimes it works, sometimes
it doesn't. See the following for an example:

[laurens at beta] </usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1/net> find --version
GNU find version 4.1.20
[laurensb at beta] </usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1/net> find -name *.ko
./ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_pptp.ko
./ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_proto_gre.ko
./ipv4/netfilter/ipt_TARPIT.ko
[snip]
./ipv6/netfilter/ip6t_nth.ko
./ipv6/ah6.ko
./ipv6/esp6.ko
./ipv6/ip6_tunnel.ko
./ipv6/ipcomp6.ko
./ipv6/ipv6.ko
./xfrm/xfrm_user.ko
./key/af_key.ko
[laurens at beta] </usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1/net> cd ipv4
[laurens at beta] </usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1/net/ipv4> find -name *.ko
find: paths must precede expression
Usage: find [path...] [expression]

Why does find work in a certain directories, but doesn't work in others?
