Minor correction: it's the .a file, not the .la file (the latter is used 
by libtool). The .a version of the library (which is actually an ar 
archive) is the copy designed to be used for static linking, but not 
every library will be installed with a static version available.

The best the OP can do is try to use -static to link his app and see 
what happens; any missing .a archives will show up and link time and 
solutions can be found for them.
