/dev/hdi+ not recognised

Hi,

I seem unable to get any device above /dev/hdh recognised.
when I try to partition, cfdisk -or other- returns:
Unable to open /dev/hdx

Yet I did create the devices hdi,j,k,l with ./MAKEDEV and they seem to have the right chmod and chown (root:disk).
I even made them manual (mknod).

Is there something else I have to enable? -kernel or other-
I'm using a 694D with onboard promise and an extra PCI controller. I try to make a software raid with 4 80Gb drives.
The kernel recognised both controllers and all the drives as the kernel log shows.
Thanks for any help in advance
