I'm using the Aladin V chipset successfully with the 2.4.20 kernel for a 
while. Probably the are some problems between the controller and your hard 
disc when running dma modes.
Or even simplier to less power. The Aladin V chipset is known to behave badly 
at lower voltage than expected. See the references with the TNT2 chipset. If 
you have a Asus P5A board you can increase the core voltage by some milli 
voltage. That made by board more stable but the cpu a little hotter. ;-)
