solved: problem in GCC 3.2 (CVS package lfs-packages-cvs-20020826-1614)

Well, it looks like it was indeed my ancient binutils et al.  I didn't 
want to say 'it works' until it booted, which it did this morning; there 
may be other problems, but just building the binutils into another dir 
that got prepended to my path did the trick quite nicely.
