Been there, done that;

> mkdir /mnt/lfs/usr/bin/awk

Yes. Happened to me also. For me, it was a typo in the sed command.

rm /mnt/lfs/usr/bin/awk

But what we want is not a directory called awk, but a symlink to gawk.
Do the rm anyway and recheck your spelling in the sed command.
