using non HDD system as host

I've used gentoo for LFS 3.3, and the LFS boot cd for LFS 4.0.  No
problems that I noticed.

you used just the boot portion of gentoo, not the install correct?  I am
unfamiliar with the LFS boot CD!  Where can I get more info on this?
