using non HDD system as host

Does anyone have any experiences/feedback with using a boot disk or CD-based
install (slackware, coollinux, etc) as a host system for building LFS?
I would like to try to build a LFS 4.0 system, (built a 3.0 system already)
but perform the install from a system that is not on the same physical HDD.
So, boot to a floppy or CD with a small host system and necessary utils,
make the lfs partition on the hard drive, do the rest of chapter 5 working
inside the floppy/cd host system, then chroot onto the disk system.
Is this possible? What are the potential problems? What are the base utils
I need on the host to complete the static install in cht 5?
