gcc-3.2 compiling probs

I Got a bug report whilst installing gcc-3.2 as per page 58 in LFS book 4.0

The box is a 486DX100 with 32Meg of ram.  Two swap partitions of 128M each.
and running Redhat 7.2  (stop laughing)

If anybody has an idea what is going on, I'd love an answer.
