Grub installation on XFS filesystem

I assume you mean ext2fs when you write xfs. What is the content of
/dev/hda1? You created a filesystem using mke2fs and copied some files 
onto it?
What happens, if you boot from grub floppy and try the autocompletion 
of the grub shell? What does it give you, if you write
  kernel (hd0,0)/<tab>
(* Create floppy by 'cat stage1 stage2 > /dev/fd0' *)
