4.0-rcl Bash compile error

That  \  symbol hides the next symbol.  It is in the book because
it represents   \<enter>   so the new line is hidden, and the next
line is read

If you want to do the instructions on one line do

./configure --enable-static-link --prefix=$LFS/static --with
> -curses && make && make install

but make sure that they are on one line.  There is a generated new
line above after --with

But better do them like the book

./configure --enable-static-link \<enter>
--prefix=$LFS/static --with-curses &&<enter>
make &&<enter>
make install
