approaches have been suggested on the group, check the lfs-dev archives 
for October and November.

Depends, there are many hacks when building from scratch. But if you 
plan to upgrade a 2.2.5 system to 2.3.1, you may just install the new 
glibc on top of the existing one, recompile all the pkgs in the order 
mentioned in the book and then delete the libraries that belong to 
glibc-2.2.5.

Depends on which method you follow.
