found a solution - well, MY solution, anyway.

this was caused by a kernel that was compiled for the default architecture
i686. if you are not running a > P2/Celeron, you need to do make menuconfig,
find the line "Pentium III (Coppermine)/Celeron" and change it to classic
Pentium or earlier, depending on your CPU.
