gcc compilation failure, than success

The first compilation of gcc (chapter 5) worked
perfecly.

The second compilation is a different story. Why does the
LFS book script make the gcc-build directory
again when it already exists? Why does it try to patch
an already patched version of gcc?

In order to compile gcc in chapter 6 (without errors), i had
to rm -rf gcc-build gcc-2.95.3, and bunzip and untar gcc
again. The script worked perfectly then where as before
it was giving me bootstrap errors.

[ just thought i'd let you know ]
