You re-ran the other set of instructions without starting from a clean
source. From a clean tree, you would see this:
gcc -c -Dre_max_failures=re_max_failures2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -Os
-march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -s -pipe -DNULL_DEVICE=\"/dev/null\"
And you see the -Dre_max_failures=re_max_failures2 in the 'gcc' command
which means it's going to work then.
