This is the best set of resouces I have found to learn Linux:
(knowing you have a basic understanding of a PC)

I recomend reading the book
"Running Linux" by O'Rielly,
(got it yesterday, awesome)
using any non-redhat (or redhat based) distro. (I hate the way they organize
things)
and installing LFS

I think this is the best solution available for any new user.
They'res a LOT of bad books I have gone through, and saldy bought.
