Segmentation fault on "chroot"

So now I have removed all optimizations and reverted to 2.4.17. Same behaviour. I'm stumped.
I'm guessing this must have something to do with mismatched software on my base system, which started as Slackware 8.0, updated to kernel 2.4.13-ac8.
In the meantime, I think I'll update the base kernel to 2.4.17, see if that helps.
