Compiler options hierarchy...

I believe it is positional in the sense that the last option is used. In
your case, that would be -O3 and -march=i686.

With "-O1 -O3 -O2 -march=i386 -march=i686 -march=athlon" you would wind up
with a moderately optimized (-O2) binary compiled for AMD Athlon processors
(-march=athlon).
