error in compiling grep 2.4.2

It seems you didn't export re_max_failures properly. Make sure the commands
are exactly as
in the book:

export CPPFLAGS=-Dre_max_failures=re_max_failures2 &&
./configure --prefix=$LFS/usr --disable-nls &&
unset CPPFLAGS &&
make LDFLAGS=-static &&
make install
