building for lower systems

Hi I'm currently working on my 4th LFS system and the compiling and such
all goes well but when I boot the system hangs at
Freed 244k Memory (or something like that) and when I try to do a chroot
I get a Illegal instruction.
I think I figured out why this is because I compiled LFS on an Pentium 3
1Ghz and I run LFS on a Pentium MMX 233.
I also tried to compile with CFALGS=-march=i486 but doesn't work either.

Is there any way to compile on a faster system and still being able to
run it at a lower system?
