You have to know your hardware -- only install the minimum, ie, no 
vfat support if you don't need it (for Windows partitions or 
floppies), no NFS, etc.  The Help options in "make menuconfig" and 
"make xconfig" will tell you what the driver is for and if you'll need 
it.
