That's one of the things I meant yes. Perhaps a quicker fix:
cp -dRiv instead of cp -aiv

that way the -p won't be invoked (-a == -dpR) which will write the new files 
owned by whoever copies the files (probably root in most cases).

That may be the best solution. Can somebody test it?
