mouse needs a symlink to work properly?

Hi all, I wanted to hook up my ps2 mouse. I tried it by typing:

gpm -m /dev/psaux -t imps2. This didn't work as expected, most erratic
movements, and clicks.

when i first make a symlink from /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux, and then type this:
gpm -m /dev/mouse -t imps2 all is well.

Why does this symlink makes such a difference?

Just curious,
Cedric

btw, do you also know why kde uses a different clock than console?
