Looks like ulimit -c ulimited gives coredumps.
$ gdb date core
Core was generated by `/sources/lfs-packages/coreutils-5.0/src/date
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
$ ./date AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
./date: invalid date `AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA'
